Automatic Transfer Switches
A high quality automatic transfer switch (ATS) is necessary to safely install an emergency generator. The ATS is
designed to prevent the generator from back feeding the utility and to protect the generator when utility power is
restored. WINCO recommends ASCO switches for our generators because over the years they have been proven in
eldapplicationstoworkwhenyouneedthemmost.

Disconnect
The ATS is installed between the main
distribution panel and the emergency
distribution panel. Only emergency circuits are
powered by the generator during an outage.
A service entrance rated ATS is installed
between the utility meter and the main
distribution panel. All circuits are powered by
the generator.
A non-service entrance rated ATS is installed
between the service disconnect and main
distribution panel. All circuits are powered by
the generator.
Typical Installations
There are three common
installation methods for automatic
standby generators. Proper
installation depends upon each
application and local ordinances.
